Thanks to those who made it to the Dancing Monkey Cabaret’s “New Year, New World” show at the end of January! We had a blast, as this past show included music, hilarious skits, political satire, stand-up, and choreographed routines using Segways. That’s not a typo. The music included songs suited to the theme, such as Sting’s “Brand New Day” (for which I sang lead vocal) and U2′s “Beautiful Day” as well as “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, although in our show chock full of political satire it was performed by Barack Obama and Sarah Palin. Those of you familiar with Geoffrey’s “Bea Arthur” song may take interest in knowing that we played it this past weekend as well. It’s cabaret, so there’s a little bit of everything! I have the pleasure of working with an incredibly good band with Russ Starrett on the keys and Drake Kennedy on the bass. Russ, by the way, played drums while I played guitar and sang one of my originals called “More Time.” It’s a lot of fun to play a show where a trio playing jazz before the show and behind introductions is part of the ambience, and it’s great to have Russ and Drake to jam with.
The next cabaret show, which runs February 27-March 1 will be called “The Other Side of Love” and will be once again held at the Academy Theater in Avondale Estates. The first half we’ll show you some hearts and flowers, but the second half… not so much. Whatever the current status of your love life is, there will something you can somehow relate to. We’ll do another one of my originals as well as lots of songs you know and love. There will be a variety of talent, and it will be highly entertaining as usual.
I’m continuing to get my songs ready for the April 4 show at Galactic Quest (see the previous blog entry). FREE ADMISSION to it, and a lot of fun once you get there. One of the things I like about the cabaret is one of the same things I like about Lost Boys, which is the variety that the show gives you, and that is my goal for that show as well. I like to explore different musical styles (as I personally hate to listen to bands whose every song sounds the same), and I like to write about different sorts of things. Some of the songs are akin to what a a musically inclined comedian might sing while others are very sincere. Some are such that you can’t quite tell. A couple of the ones that I’ve been preparing would probably sound mean if someone else sang them, but from me they’ll probably be funny. I usually write from the heart and write when I’m inspired, but I also have a pirate song that I wrote just for kicks. Different styles, different events, different emotions, and different times in my life are all part of the show, and I’ll do my best to make sure that you enjoy yourself there. Be sure and sign up on my mailing list if you have not already done so, and I hope to see you then if not sooner!
